Faults and problems

Signs that your heat pump needs checking

A change from normal operation deserves attention. We help you organise the symptoms without attempting to repair the equipment yourself.

The important thing is to identify what has changed

An installation can still be running and need inspection. It can also stop during a planned operating sequence without having a fault. The most useful starting point is therefore to compare what is happening now with the usual behaviour in your home. Did the change appear suddenly? Did it coincide with altered schedules? Does it affect the whole house or just one room?

You do not need to find the cause before making contact. An organised description avoids confusing a symptom with an explanation that has not yet been checked. Saying that the living room takes longer to reach its temperature is better than claiming the system is short of refrigerant.

Repeated warnings and stops

A displayed code provides information, but its meaning depends on the make and model. Record the complete text and photograph the screen from a safe position. State when it appeared and whether the equipment started working again. Do not search for a button combination to clear warnings or repeatedly reset the unit while the problem continues.

Also distinguish a blank display, equipment on standby and a fault warning. They are different situations. The user manual helps identify what your controller is showing; an explanation intended for another appliance can lead to the wrong conclusion.

Reduced comfort with no clear explanation

If you were comfortable before but now keep needing to adjust the thermostat, describe which rooms are affected. Note the requested setting, the room temperature shown by the controller and the time. If hot water performance has also changed, report that separately.

Before attributing it to the equipment, consider whether occupancy, ventilation or the weekly programme has changed. These details do not rule out a fault; they help establish the context. Avoid altering several settings at once, as it will then be difficult to know which change coincided with an improvement or deterioration.

Changes in sound, water or energy use

A new noise, persistent vibration or water leak warrants an enquiry. Describe where and when it appears. Do not remove panels to get a better view. A photograph of the overall installation and another of the visible point are usually more useful than bringing a phone close to moving parts.

For energy use, compare the energy consumed and the dates, not just the amount on the bill. A different tariff can increase the cost without the equipment using more energy. If you have a separate heat pump consumption record, keep a screenshot and note changes in use or outdoor weather.

Know when to stop checking

Checks at home stop when they require opening the unit, working on valves or touching connections. If there is smoke, a burning smell, water near electrical components or violent vibration, move away and avoid continuing to use the system; seek assistance and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions. Do not try to reproduce a dangerous situation to record it.

For a problem without those signs, keep the available information and ask for advice on the next step. The fact that equipment starts working again does not, on its own, show that the cause has gone away.

Prepare an enquiry that helps move things forward

Summarise the situation in a few lines: town or area, make and model if known, affected service, when it began and what you have observed. Add the exact code and any recent changes. There is no need to send the whole history at once; keep it available in case it is requested.

At Red Málaga, we assess the information to confirm whether we can attend to your equipment and agree the work required. Preventive inspection and fault diagnosis have different purposes: state which you need so the proposal addresses your situation.

More common questions

Does a single warning mean a component must be replaced?

That cannot be decided from the warning alone. Keep a record and ask what it means for that model. Diagnosis relates the controller's information to the condition of the installation.
