How to look after the service life of your heat pump installation

The unit's age does not tell the whole story. The system's condition, use and inspections help establish what it needs.

There is no expiry date that applies to every system

It is reasonable to ask how many years a heat pump lasts, but a general figure cannot tell you how long your installation will last. Operating conditions, surroundings and maintenance affect how it ages. The system also comprises different components: work on one does not necessarily mean replacing the whole installation.

To care for the equipment, it helps to change the question: what condition is it in today, which problems recur and what work is needed? That information supports decisions about a particular unit, rather than comparing its age with a generic expectation.

Keep the original information

Gather equipment identification and any installation and commissioning documents available. Keep the operating instructions and settings that have been explained to you. If you buy a home with an existing heat pump, ask the previous owner for that information and its inspection history.

Not knowing the full background does not mean the system must be replaced. It does make it advisable to explain the situation when requesting an initial inspection. Knowing what is installed is the first step towards appropriate maintenance and avoids starting every enquiry from scratch.

Arrange inspections to suit your system

Preventive maintenance allows the condition and operation to be reviewed before a problem forces action. Its scope should reflect the equipment present and the manufacturer's recommendations. Not every home needs the same tasks, and a universal frequency cannot be set simply because the system is a heat pump.

When comparing proposals, check which components are included and which checks will be documented. Clarify whether cleaning, travel, parts or repairs are covered by the service or require a separate quotation. A useful plan is one you understand before signing up.

Look after the surroundings and distribution system too

The installation includes more than the outdoor unit. The technician may need to assess the emitters, controls and water circuit. If you renovate the home, change flooring or alter rooms, report it before assuming performance will remain identical.

In daily use, keep equipment areas accessible and avoid adding enclosures that hinder operation or maintenance. For homes close to the sea, describe the site's exposure so appropriate care can be assessed; do not apply coatings or products to the equipment yourself.

Address changes rather than relying on repeated temporary fixes

Record problems that return after a reset or an intervention. If you repeatedly need the same adjustment to restore comfort, describe that sequence. Resolving today's symptom does not always explain why it has recurred.

Keep a brief history: date, problem, work carried out and the result observed. This record helps the professional relate events separated in time. It also helps you assess a repair proposal with fuller information than the memory of a bill or a single fault.

Assess repair or replacement using specific information

For a substantial repair, ask for a diagnosis and a clearly scoped proposal. Find out which component has failed, what the work is expected to restore and which limitations have been identified elsewhere in the system. The decision also depends on your present needs and the options actually compatible with the home.

An additional lifespan should not be promised, nor should an installation be dismissed solely because of its age. You can ask Red Málaga about an inspection to establish its condition and consider the next steps. The aim is to look after the service you need and make justified decisions.

More common questions

Does a maintenance contract prevent every breakdown?

It cannot guarantee that. Review the agreed tasks and terms, as well as the arrangements for dealing with faults. Maintenance provides ongoing oversight, but does not eliminate wear or every possible failure.
